Looking for a health-promoting snack? Enjoy a handful of mild nutty tasting sunflower seeds with their firm but tender texture to take care of your hunger and get a wealth of nutrition at the same time. Sunflower seeds are available at your local market throughout the year. Sunflower seeds are the gift of the beautiful sunflower that has rays of petals emanating from its bright yellow, seed-studded center. The flower produces grayish-green or black seeds encased in tear-dropped shaped gray or black shells that oftentimes feature black and white stripes. Since these seeds have a very high oil content, they are one of the main sources of polyunsaturated oil.

Growing Conditions Sunflowers need full sun to grow well. They prefer fertile, moist, well-drained soil with a lot of organic matter dug in. They tolerate a wide range of soil types, from sands to clays. They are not very tolerant of salty soil. Sunflowers have a strong taproot and show a prolific lateral spread of surface roots. Seventy to 78°F is the best temperature range for growing, although sunflowers are not particularly fussy. They are not sensitive to daylength.

Greetings folks. Can we consider the above in terms of international acceptability please? I have a query and would much appreciate knowing the consensus of the forum members. The context is thus, a translation of muesli ingredients for Spanish speaking markets. Principally Spain and Colombia, but eventually other markets. Sunflower seeds in the WR dictionary says (de girasol) pipas. My paper dictionary (Oxford concise) says 1. semillas de girasol 2. pipas (España) RAE says pipas = pepitas, pepitas according to RAE refers to melón, pera but makes no reference to sunflowers. I would value your opinions on the following. Is the word "pipas" acceptable in spain on a list of cereal ingredients? Is it too informal? Would it be immediately recognised as sunflower seeds or would it be ambiguous? Is the term pipas also recognised in Latin America as sunflower seeds? Is the term "semillas de girasol" more internationally acceptable, less ambiguous and appropriate for all Spanish speaking territories? Any views are most gratefully received. Best wishes Mark Hello MarkLondres, Although "pipas de girasol" sounds well, unless in Spain, I agree with Alexacohen and I would use "semillas de girasol". I think it is more formal and I have never seen this writen as an ingredient.

Sunflower Oil Sunflower oil is a combination of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats with low saturated fat levels. It is light in taste and appearance and supplies more Vitamin E than any other vegetable oil. There are basically three types of sunflower oil available, each with its unique properties. * NuSun- is a mid-oleic sunflower oil with a lower monounsaturated fat level than high oleic sunflower oil, but a lower saturated fat level than linoleic oil. Hence it is considered a mid-range oleic sunflower oil * Linoleic – It contains essential fatty acids that are polyunsaturated. * High oleic- They have monounsaturated fat levels of 80 percent or higher Also according to new research being done in the United Kingdom, scientists are developing a process for making hydrogen from sunflower oil, which may become an important future source of eco-friendly energy.
